1. What is stamp duty Tasmania?

Stamp duty (also known as transfer duty) is a tax on buying property. Depending on the price of the property you’re buying there will be different rates. You’ll be charged a fixed amount as well as a percentage of the property price. These two components determine your stamp duty.

2. How much is stamp duty in Tasmania?

There are seven different price brackets your property can fall into and depending on your circumstances you may qualify for an exemption.

$25,001 to $75,000 $435 plus 2.25% for every dollar over $25,000

$200,001 to $375,000 $5,935 plus 4% for every dollar over $200,000
$375,001 to $725,000 $12,395 plus 4.25% for every dollar over $375,000
More than $725,000 $27,810 plus 4.5% for every dollar over $725,000

3. When do I pay stamp duty in Tasmania?

In Tasmania you must pay stamp duty within three months of the transfer of the property.
